Yoga Classes for Men - Central and SW London, UK

by Charlotte Carnegie
(London, UK)

Why shouldn't yoga be for men?

I'm a (female) yoga teacher based in London, teaching mainly one-to-one yoga. Over time I've been surprised to find that my most long-term clients and those who've found the most out of yoga practice have had one thing in common: they're men who thought they "couldn't do" yoga because they weren't fit or flexible (or both!).

There seems to be a widespread belief that yoga is mainly for women - either because men feel uncomfortable attending classes which are predominantly attended by women, or because it is thought that yoga requires physical flexibility, or indeed conversely that yoga doesn't promote muscle tone and strength or other "manly" qualities.

The beauty of one-to-one tuition is that you don't have to worry about who else is in the class, and what they can and can't do with their legs - and indeed whether you want to practice asana (physical poses) at all, as opposed to learning about yoga philosophy, meditation and all the other great things yoga has to offer - any of which might be more suitable for what you want to achieve.

I'll be publishing an article on my blog soon which aims to shatter all these myths and attempt to explain how they've come about
